This course offers the skills and knowledge required to provide a basic first aid response, emergency life support and management of casualty(s), the incident and other first aiders until the arrival of medical or other assistance.

The skills and knowledge contained in this course are recognised as the benchmark standard satisfying training requirements across many occupational qualifications and industries.

Course Content

  • Assessment of an emergency situation
  • Recognition and management of an unconscious casualty
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (variations for adults, children and infants)
  • Understanding the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Evaluation of the incident
  • Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines
  • Provision of first aid for a range of injury and illness conditions including:
    • Abdominal injuries
    • Allergic reactions
    • Altered and loss of consciousness
    • Bleeding
    • Broken bones, including sprains, strains and dislocations
    • Burns
    • Chest pain
    • Choking/airway obstruction
    • Head, neck and spinal injuries
    • Envenomation - snake, spider, insect and marine bites
    • Hypothermia, hyperthermia, dehydration, heat stroke
    • Medical conditions, including epilepsy, diabetes, asthma, seizures, stroke
    • Poisoning and toxic substances (including chemical contamination)
    • Shock

Duration

Option 1:     Usually a two day format is recommended

Option 2:     One day courses are available in a flexible mode which includes guided, self-directed personal study and trainer-facilitated workshops

Assessment

Participants are subject to competency based assessment.  Participants must demonstrate competence in knowledge, skills and attitude related to course requirements.

Award

A Statement of Attainment is issued to participants on successful completion and is current for 3 years.
